Description: 
Patients with chemical eye injuries and different type of eye infections typically suffer from pain, blurred vision and a red eye. Conjunctivitis is the most common eye infection. Corneal infection (keratitis) is less common but it has a serious risk to vision. Topical drug administration to the anterior segment of the eye is often limited by clearance mechanisms of the corneal surface and other factors, including eye blinking, tear film, tear turnover, solution drainage and tears discharge. Thus, most topically administered drugs are washed away within a few seconds after instillation. Hampered by these factors and ocular barriers, the efficacy of the total administered drugs is less than 5%, suggesting the poor bioavailability of ocular drugs and also severe adverse ocular effects. Alternatively, the emerging nanoscience and nanotechnology are playing an important role in the development of novel strategies for ocular diseases. An SME from Latvia working in ophthalmology field has developed innovative hydrogel lenses for the application in the immediate treatment of chemical eye injuries and different types of eye infections. Therapeutic antimicrobial contact lenses have been created thanks to scientific breakthrough - polymer material synthesis of hydrogel and nanoparticles: highly absorptive and easy to insert and remove. Characteristics of the new material made it possible for application in ophthalmology. Electrostatic force leads to immobilization and inactivation of viruses. The lenses absorb bacteria, fungus, toxins, chemicals, and presents one of very few non-drugs alternative available on the market. The lenses could be used for both, human and animal eye treatment.
