The German-based start-up made up of an interdisciplinary team with backgrounds in teaching, academia, IT and business administration developed an English-learning mobile app targeting academic learners. With the app, students have the opportunity to improve their academic vocabulary. The app enriches the users’ productive vocabulary, helping them to improve and diversify vocabulary that is used in academic contexts. To this end, the app conveys precise nuances and clear contexts to provide a better understanding of how the vocabulary is typically used, finally eliciting it effectively from the user’s memory. In order to facilitate the process of vocabulary acquisition, the app employs a carefully selected combination of learning methods designed to foster productive skills. The app takes into consideration the user’s interactions in addition to the individual’s learning progress. The carefully-designed algorithm accordingly displays meaningful and apposite exercises to the user. As an app tailor-made for academia, exclusive use rights will be given to partnering universities and institutions under a license agreement - the standard version of the app can be accessed by students free-of-charge with about 70% of content. Students can opt into the premium version of the app with access to all premium content for an additional charge. The start-up has alread established partnerships with renowned universities in Germany, the Netherlands as well as Japan.
