Summary:
A Finnish research institute specialized in bioeconomy solutions and sustainable use of natural resources is looking for partners from the mulch, biochar and garden industry for licensing agreement, who would be interested in novel biodegradable mulching technology for weed management in Japan, Russia, China, Canada and Germany. The aim is to license the developed biodegradable mulching technology for product and service development to a company partner.
Description:
A large Finnish research institute promoting bioeconomy and sustainable use of natural resources has developed a unique biodegradable mulching technology for weed management and is now looking for partners from the mulch, biochar and garden industry interested in novel weed management solutions. The institute has wide experience in plant health, different cultivation methods, utilization of pyrolysis products and development of novel biobased fertilizers and other solutions for weed management. The developed mulching technology is based on plant originating materials (peat, water, pyrolysis oil, biochar). The weed-suppressing effect of developed mulch is highest in the city park, where the weed coverage around the base of trees was reduced by 85% still 12 weeks after application, being thus comparable to the effect of several commercial herbicides and biodegradable mulches. The aim is to commercialize the developed solution using a licensing model. Further development by replacing the slowly renewing peat with other organic renewable components is also possible. The main effect of the mulch against weeds is physical and is not covered by the scope of the EC Regulation 1107/2009 regarding the placing of plant protection products on the market. Eventhough the product itself does not need authorization in Europe, the REACH approval for production of pyrolysis oil and biochar are needed in Europe. The research institute is looking for partners for licensing agreement from the mulch, biochar and gardening industry in Japan, Russia, China, Canada and Germany. The institute has strong experience in bioeconomy, pyrolysis, research and international research sales.
