Summary:
A Dutch SME has co-developed a wearable sensor technology platform for medical applications. The sensors are practical and comfortable to use applied on skin or integrated in clothing. They can be worn for long periods of time in hospital or at home using flexible and stretchable printed electrodes. The SME wants to enable new applications with partners from the medical, sports or military fields, and offers research, technical cooperation and commercial agreement with technical assistance.
Description:
Care providers and clinicians rely on accurate, long term monitoring for effective health management. This requires medical devices that are practical to use, comfortable and reliable to be worn on the body for long periods of time. This Dutch SME's wearable sensor technology platform combines innovative hardware with flexible printed electronics and biocompatible materials for a wide range of applications. The company's wearable sensors can be applied directly on a patient's or person's skin or the sensor technology can be integrated in clothing. It can be used in the hospital or at home care settings or anywhere outdoors. In joint development with two renowned Dutch research centers this SME developed the wearable sensor technology platform to monitor vital signs, allowing patients to leave the hospital earlier and recover at home in a comfortable and safe manner. At the core of this platform technology a wearable sensor and optimized algorithms translate the measured vital signs into usable clinical data. This technology will help healthcare companies to bring customized wearable devices to market, targeting pre- and post-operative monitoring, ambulatory monitoring and a variety of specific conditions such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), and for the remote monitoring of Covid-19 patients. Because of its modular design, additional vital function measures can be integrated, such as oxygen saturation and vascular dynamics. Several applications have been developed. For example a wearable sensor consisting of a disposable unit which is placed on the chest of the patient. A separate recorder is placed onto the disposable. After use the recording is stored and the recorder is disinfected, recharged and ready for the next patient. The disposable is flexible and made of materials that can breathe so that effects on the skin are minimal. This application logs electrocardiogram (ECG), breathing rate using bio-impedance measurement, activity, posture and motion data with sample rates up to 256 samples per second (sps) and a duration of 5-7 days. The application can also stream raw measurement data using Bluetooth low energy to a computer, laptop or mobile phone. The exact implementation and usage of this wireless streaming differs per application and per use case. The company wants to expand the range of applications of this platform technology and is looking for partners for research, technical cooperation and commercial agreement with technical assistance. The company foresees a cooperation with researchers and companies active on sports or military technologies but is open to look at applications from other fields. Cooperation partners are expected to bring in their expertise on specific requirements for use and requirements for applications in the frame of research and technical cooperation. In the frame of commercial agreement with technical assistance partners are expected to bring in their expertise on market or business opportunities.
Type (e.g. company, R&D institution…), field of industry and Role of Partner Sought:
The type of partner sought: Both researchers and SMEs. Most likely the partners are active in clinical, sports or military fields but the Dutch company is also open to partners for other fields for technical and research cooperation. SMEs are sought for commercial agreement with technical assistance. The role of partner sought: Cooperation partners are expected bring in their expertise on processes and specific requirements for use and requirements for applications in the frame of research and technical cooperation. Partners willing to enter in a commercial agreement with technical assistance are expected to bring in their expertise on market or business opportunities and provide marketing and sales of the platform technology in their region.
